Tuscany

Storybook Sangiovese

The keystone region of central Italy, Tuscany looms large in our collective consciousness: its art and literature, its language (it is the Tuscan dialect which came to be synonymous with Italian), its idyllic landscape of undulating hills, cypresses, and olive trees—and, of course, its wine. The native Sangiovese and its various strains produce not only Tuscany’s finest red wines but among the greatest wines in all of Italy: bright, savory Chianti from a swath of communes just north of Siena; to the southwest, close to Umbria, stately Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from sandy soils; and to the west of Montepulciano, the fabled Brunello di Montalcino—Tuscany’s boldest, most coveted, and most age-worthy red wine. Brunello must be produced solely from the local Sangiovese Grosso, whereas Chianti and Vino Nobile typically blend in small portions of other indigenous varieties such as Canaiolo and Colorino. While Tuscan wine culture hews toward conservatism (often to a fault), we at Rosenthal are proud to work with several growers who operate outside the appellation system, producing deeply personal yet classical renderings of these terroirs.
