Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Birthplace of the Skin-Contact Revival

This far-northeastern corner of Italy has long been a hotbed of fiercely independent, boundary-pushing growers—particularly in the Carso and the Collio, subregions whose proximity to Slovenia make them fascinating cultural interzones. Here, growers frequently employ extended maceration in the model of early pioneers like Josko Gravner, and favor long, patient aging with a minimum of manipulation in the cellar. These uncompromising and authoritative wines, from local varieties such as Vitovska and Ribolla, set a lofty standard for skin contact whites—and the red wines, if lesser known, are equally impressive.
