Lazio

Transcending the ordinary

With only 15% of its vineyard area dedicated to DOC wines, Rome’s home region produces a wealth of mostly white wine (85%), primarily from Trebbiano and Malvasia. Despite its often-uninspiring workaday output, recent years have seen exciting developments in the region—in our case, a convent of Cistercian nuns in the town of Vitorchiano who, under the tutelage of the visionary Giampiero Bea, produce characterful and much-beloved low-intervention wines from their unique volcanic soils.
