Veneto

Finding gems in an ocean

Centered around the city of Venice, a hugely important port city during the wine trade of the Middle Ages, the Veneto is Italy’s largest wine-producing region by volume, issuing forth 250 million gallons per year. Stretching northward to the Alps and the border of Austria, the Veneto encompasses a broad range of terroirs, with its most notable wines including Valpolicella, Soave, Prosecco, and an expanding ocean of Pinot Grigio. While a great deal of the region’s output is commercially driven and relatively insipid, some of the Veneto’s historical but long-forgotten zones—many of which occupy hillsides near Vicenza and Padua—are being revived by a handful of driven visionaries.
