Between Bordeaux and the Pyrenees

This catch-all region encompasses all the wine zones in France’s southwest quadrant with the exception of Bordeaux. Appellations such as Bergerac and Côtes de Duras, in the region’s northern reaches, offer similar wines to Bordeaux, employing the same set of grape varieties and very similar soil types and configurations, whereas appellations like Jurançon, Iroléguy, and Madiran nestled closer to the Pyrenees and further south, are worlds unto themselves, with distinctive indigenous varieties and wines of commanding personality.
